Winter Roof Maintenance Projects – Roofline Guttering

During the winter, your gutters are going to work a lot harder than the rest of the year. What’s more, with falling leaves from local trees, they are likely to get blocked without the right care and attention. This quick guide will give you the knowledge to work safely and efficiently on your gutter this winter.

Start by inspecting all gutters on your property. For this, you will need a decent-sized ladder. It’s advisable that you have a second person at the foot of the ladder to ensure that it is safe at all times. Clean the gutters from any leaves, dirt and debris and perhaps flush them down with a hose afterwards.

If this is a job that you’d rather do as little as possible, we recommend installing a mesh screen or leaf-catching system as this will significantly reduce the need to clean them out so frequently. Britelite Windows install guards on all guttering jobs as standard.

Over time, guttering can sometimes lose its slope. If, when cleaning your roofline products, you notice pools of water in the pipes, this could mean you have a flat spot that will need sorting. Ideally, your gutter needs to slope at a rate of 0.25 inches per 10 feet. You can easily change the slope by adjusting the fixings that attach the pipe to the house.

Sometimes if the gutter has become damaged or has a leak, you can get away with a small fix. To do this, you will need fibreglass resin and gutter sealant to patch the hole. Start by cleaning the area with a wire brush, cover with solvent and allow to dry. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin coat of resin to the affected area before sticking down a layer of mesh. This should be repeated 24 hours later, giving a stronger, more durable level of protection.

These simple jobs will give you a good place to start on your gutter repairs. Of course, if your roofline is in a complete state of disarray beyond a few simple patch-ups, we recommend getting the whole system replaced. At Britelite Windows, we can replace roofline products for you. Britelite’s commitment to quality ensures your roofline products will stand up to the elements for many years to come.
