How to save money on heating your home

Save money on heating your home this coming Winter

As much as we’d like to pretend it isn’t, summer is (unfortunately) behind us, making now the time to batten down the hatches. In the words of George RR Martin, “winter is coming”. So, what can you do to ensure that your home remains comfy and cosy, without causing your bank account to freeze over?

Triple glazed windows

Triple glazing may seem like an expensive way to keep your home warm, but the amount of money you will save on heating bills will mean that they’ll essentially pay for themselves. Made up with three panels of glass with double argon filled cavities, triple glazed windows throw radiated heat back into your home. Because they are 40% more efficient than standard A-rated double glazing, triple glazing could save you up to £766 a year on your heating bills if you’re upgrading from single glazed windows. That’s bound to make your toes feel warmer.

Turn down the heat

This may seem like a pretty straight forward solution, but did you know that by reducing room temperature by just 1°C could cut your heating bills by almost 10%. Pulling on the knitwear rather than reaching for the thermostat will definitely help keep your wallet feeling a little cosier.

Draught-proof doors

There are some really simple ways to achieve this, like placing a draught-excluder along the bottom or making sure keyholes are covered. But the only sure way to improve the insulation of your doors is to invest in a high quality composite door. Composite doors are 44mm thick, which compared to conventional PVC panel doors at 28mm thick, it’s obvious why they’re the choice. If your not getting a new composite door installed, it is the perfect time to add a threshold strip to the bottom of the door to cover any gaps, as well as draught-proofing your letterbox. Make sure your door isn’t letting in the cold this coming Autumn/ Winter.
