This June brought some of the hottest days since the 70s in the South East, so we thought it was about time to write about how double glazing can help you keep cool in your home when the sun puts its very best hat on.
Most people associate double glazing with trying to keep warm in the winter, but the truth is it actually works both ways. It has great benefits all year round.
The very same technology which keeps the heat in your home during the winter months is what keeps the heat out during the summer. The two panes of glass, separated by an Argon gas-filled chamber, work by A) not letting any hot air through and B) dramatically slowing the rate of energy transfer by convection or conduction. On the hot side of the glazing the air molecules are vibrating very fast, which is what we perceive as heat. This vibration can pass through one pane of glass, but then struggles to pass through the central chamber and very little vibration will get through the second pane of glass. That means the air on the inside stays cool, and you stay more comfortable.
This also means, if you have air conditioning, that you save lots of money on your energy bills by not having to use it as much. If you don’t have air conditioning, it means you don’t need to sit around in your underwear eating ice cubes to keep cool!
