Kent Now Home of The World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm

The world's largest offshore wind farm opened on 24 September 2010 just seven miles off the Kent coast.

The project cost in the region of £900m and took the Swedish electricity company, Vattenfall, two years to complete.

The 100-strong army of wind turbines, which reach 115 metres high at their tallest point, will produce around 300 megawatts power - enough electricity to supply heat and light to more than 200,000 homes.

According to a Vattenfall spokesman, this installation is "a significant investment in renewable wind energy."

Before this wind farm was installed and operational, renewable energy contributed to just 10% of the nation's power. With this installation - coupled with a similar project currently under construction in the Thames estuary - the Government hopes to see this figure rise to 30% by the end of the decade.
